Beat’s radio presenter Emma Nolan went above and beyond the call of duty earlier this year by re-sitting the Junior Cert in a unique social experiment and today she’s celebrating with the 60,000 young people who also received their results!
To help her answer the question “are students today under more pressure than students years ago sitting exams?” and to ensure she was more ‘in the moment’ with her listeners who sat exams, Beat 102-103 night time presenter Emma Nolan took the brave step to go back and sit this year’s JuniorCert English, Irish and Maths. So how did she do?

Nerve rackingly, Emma’s results were revealed to her live on air on Beat Breakfast by the station’s CEO Gabrielle Cummins. Emma admitted she was most nervous about getting the results of her Ordinary Level Maths paper because she felt it was her weakest so she was ecstatic to learn she managed to scrape a pass in that subject! Next up was Irish Higher Level and her dedication to study while in school obviously stood to her as she secured a ‘B’ As Gaeilge. Last but not least was English Higher Level and the pressure was on with this subject because Emma is an honours English degree graduate from University of Limerick so she really wanted to do well in this subject. Beat Boss Gabrielle Cummins kept the suspense going for a while on air but eventually revealed that Emma had gotten 82%; just 3% off an A grade and she congratulated Emma on the impressive results highlighting the fact that “I don’t think there are many adults who would turn back the clock and re-sit their junior cert so everybody here at Beat has been really impressed by Emma’s dedication to this social experiment – she really put her head down and worked hard so fair play to her – I feel like a proud Mammy!”
Leading regional radio station Beat 102-103 dominates the airwaves at night time with a market share 7pm-midnight of nearly 50% so according to Head of Station Sound Niall Power “Emma’s show ‘The takeover’ featuring ‘The Top7@7’ is the perfect platform to carry out a social experiment of this nature. We also just want to say a massive thanks to teachers from her old school Blackwater Secondary School in Lismore County Waterford who came on board to provide one on one tutorials. Throughout the seven weeks of this experiment, we also had fellow exam students volunteering to come live on air & online on our social media forums to provide Emma with their exam tips so a massive thanks to them & congratulations to everyone receiving their results today” added Niall Power.
Today, Emma donned her school uniform once again to receive the results and to conclude this social experiment, Emma hopes to celebrate in style with fellow students. Beat 102-103 is hosting a massive results party this Friday night at Waves nightclub in Dungarvan and Emma herself will be spinning the tunes “I’m so relieved to have passed all three subjects and very much looking forward to the celebrations on Friday night and thanks to everyone for the support; it was a really nerve racking experience but fun too. That’s one of the things I love about working at Beat; you never know what they’re gonna ask you to do next!”.
