Love them or loathe them, there's no denying that the humble emoji has become synonymous with our digital lives.
So much so, that in 2015, the daddy of them all, the laughing face, won the Oxford Dictionary's Word of the Year.
It has since developed into a language of its own, one that will welcome new members this Summer with the addition of 69 new emojis.

Granted, some additions are obvious, but we're a little stumped by the addition of broccoli and elf emojis.
Yet all is immediately forgiven with the addition of an actual monocle emoji - swit swoo.
