Shelbourne claim famous scalp in Slovenia

Shelbourne's 2022-23 UEFA women's Champions League campaign started with a famous 1-0 victory against Slovenian side ZNK Pomurje.

The win sees them progress to the final of the Champions Path, where they will meet Icelandic champions Valur on Sunday.

The winner of that tie will then move on to the next stage of the competition.

They were awarded a penalty after two minutes. However, Noelle Murray's spot-kick was saved by goalkeeper Iva Kocijan.

Less than two minutes later, US legend Heather O'Reilly scored the opener with an expertly lobbed header over the helpless keeper.

O'Reilly couldn't have picked a better time to notch her first goal for the club.

The World Cup winner came out of retirement for the chance to play in the Champions League and her early goal set the tone for the game.

At the other end, goalkeeper Amanda Budden was in top form and made a string of credible saves.

The second half saw the WNL champions force to defend more and they had opportunities on the break, potentially increasing their lead.

The narrow goal lead was enough on the night and the result will supply a lot of confidence for Sunday's encounter.
