The UCD sprinter is the first ever Irish athlete to reach a senior Championship athletics 100m final and was understandably emotional upon confirmation of his record.
Speaking afterward, he said: "Honestly, I had no target. I just wanted to enjoy myself.
"I'm 20-years-old in a European final against an Olympic champion next to me.
"I just wanted to enjoy it. I had no places in mind.
"To come sixth, to beat a few guys - to get a few scalps - really meant a lot to me for sure though."
Olympic champion Lamont Jacobs took gold in a Championship-record equalling 9.95 seconds.
He finished ahead of outgoing champion Zharnel Hughes in second, with fellow British athlete Jeremiah Azu of Wales third.
