Irish teen named in Inter Milan's Europa League squad

Ireland U18 defender Ryan Nolan could make his debut for Inter Milan after being included in the Italian club's Europa League squad.

Inter take on Rapid Wien on Thursday night, with Nolan among the likes of Antonio Candreva and Stefan de Vrij in 19-man squad.

The Clare-born teen moved to Spain with his family when he was eight and signed for Inter Milan when he was 16.

He lined out for the senior team in pre-season and recently signed a two-year contract at the San Siro, where he is captain of the youth squad.

Ireland boss Mick McCarthy will no doubt be keen to see the defender play with European qualifiers approaching in March.

It was revealed today that McCarty has sent Robbie Keane to watch striker James Collins, who could be in line for a call-up.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner in August, Italy legend Gianluca Vialli believes Ryan needs to get minutes on the pitch to succeed at the club.

"You can get better by training with the first team but, at the end of the day, you need to be on the pitch playing and making mistakes and learning from that. The challenge is to convince the manager to give him some games," said the former Chelsea boss.

"It might be, at some stage, that he might have to consider going on loan, play and then go back to Inter Milan when he is ready to break into the first team."
