Andretti Autosport’s Takuma Sato took victory in Sunday’s chaotic 101st running of the Indianapolis 500.
The Japanese driver started the race from fourth place but a problem during one of his pit-stops sent him to the back of the field but the former Formula One driver made his way back up through the field passing three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, Helio Castroneves, in the closing laps to take his first Indianapolis 500 win.
Helio Castroneves ended the race in second place just ahead of IndyCar rookie Ed Jones who was third.
Former Formula One driver Max Chilton finished the race in fourth place having led the race for a time - ending the race just ahead of his team mate Tony Kanaan.
Former Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya avoided the carnage during the race to finish the event in sixth place for Team Penske just ahead of last year’s Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi.
Marco Andretti was eighth just ahead of Harding Racing’s Gabby Chaves while Carlos Munoz rounded out the top ten for AJ Foyt Racing.
It was a disappointing race for Fernando Alonso who made his Indianapolis 500 debut with McLaren Honda Andretti as he was forced to retire from the race with an engine failure. It was disappointing for the Spaniard who ran extremely strong throughout the month of May, having started the race from fifth place. One thing for sure is he will be back.
