The Dutchman was on holiday in Croatia when he suffered a reported cerebral haemorrhage, sparking widespread concern across the globe.
The 52-year-old hung up his gloves in 2011, having accomplished Champions League victories with Ajax and United.
A remarkable International career saw the shot-stopper earn 130 caps for Netherlands and recognition as one of the best in history.
Van der Sar returned to Ajax in November 2012 in a marketing role before earning a promotion to Cheif Executive in 2016.
His skillset in retirement has earned as much recognition as his exploits on the field, with many elite clubs coveting his signature.
The Voorhout native stepped down from his role at Ajax in May, citing a need for rest and personal exploration.
Thanks for everything, Edwin ♥️
You embraced the role of CEO with the same vision that defined your days as a player. We are forever grateful for that. Once an Ajax legend, always an Ajax legend.

He told the club’s official website: “After almost 11 years on the board, I am done.
“We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period.
“I am very grateful for the people I have met and worked with during my second career at Ajax and what we have achieved and been through together.
“I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things.
“It doesn’t feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign.”
