Disappointing start for Ireland at European Indoor Athletics Championships

The Irish team have had a disappointing start at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow.

European outdoor bronze medallist and Waterford native Thomas Barr finished last in his 400 metres heat in a time of 48.22 seconds.

Barr admited he was frustrated with his race as he felt the result does not reflect his form.

"Coming into the Championships I've done a good few indoor sessions up in Athlone where I've been going out quite hard and really running quite quick over 200m," said the 26-year-old.

"I felt really strong. That wasn't there when I got out onto the track and I don't know why.

"It was a frustrating race because of the shape that I know I'm in, but that's racing. You have to bring it on the day and today I just didn't."

Cillin Greene fell in his 400 metres heat.

The Galway City Harriers runner was brought down by the Czech Republic's Jan Tesar, who had tripped in front of him.
