This week on Ours To Protect, one South East residents' association tells Orla why they are determined to make our Christmas jumpers more sustainable as we head into the festive season.

- 1 in 4 Christmas jumpers are only ever worn once
- 75% of them are made from plastic fibres like acrylic or polyesters
- Acrylic fibres are made from petroleum-based chemicals, acrylic and polyester fabric contains toxins that can impact skin and the environment
- These fibres will never really breakdown in landfill
Christmas Jumper Swap Shop
A community group in Waterford has organised a Christmas jumper swap shop to work towards sustainable fashion choices this festive season.
They say: “After the great success of our rescare and rewear event held in the Dungarvan Library in October, we saw lots of Halloween costumes reused and prevented them from ending up in landfill.
“Now our attention has turned to Christmas and the ever popular Christmas Jumpers .The Final Straw Foundation has published research to show that 1 IN 4 Christmas jumpers are only ever worn once. 75% of them are made from plastic fibres like acrylic or polyesters.”
This November, to prevent this from happening, they asked people to donate any preloved Christmas jumpers to their event ranging from babies to adult jumpers .
Preloved Christmas Jumpers can be delivered to Tournore Court and they will then be available to buy for €2 or swapped at an event to be held on the 18th of November between 11am and 1 pm in the Dungarvan Library. All proceeds will go to the SVDP.
