Women's Aid is expecting an increase in calls over the Christmas period

Women's Aid is expecting an increase in calls to its helpline over the Christmas and New Year.

Women who are struggling financially, and who are having their heating restricted in their homes, have already been in contact with the charity in increasing numbers this winter.

More women are contacting the helpline about economic abuse during the cost of living crisis.

The organisation says it expects to see a further 17 per cent increase in calls to its 24-hour helpline after Christmas.

Chief executive, Sarah Benson, says Christmas can be a difficult time for many, but their local communities can help.
