Both W.I.T and I.T Carlow have both announced confirmed the Presidents for the respective educational hubs.
The Institute of Technology Carlow has reappointed Dr. Patricia Mulcahy for a second five-year term as president beginning January 2017, its Governing Body has announced.
Dr Mulcahy is one of the leading figures in Irish higher education and a major champion of a technological university of the south east. During her first term of office, she has overseen transformative change, brought clarity, vision and leadership to the Institute and the region, resulting in the Institute of Technology Carlow being recognised by the Higher Education Authority as one of the highest-performing institutions in the State.
Dr Mulcahy is a native of Carlow, a past pupil of the Presentation Convent Carlow and is married with two eleven-year-old daughters. She studied science at Institute of Technology Carlow and attained her Degree and PhD in Biochemistry at NUI Galway. Following research positions with BioResearch Ireland at NUI Galway and Dublin City University, Dr Mulcahy returned to Institute of Technology Carlow as a lecturer in biotechnology and was subsequently appointed Head of Department and then Head of Development. An eminent scientist in the field of bioscience research, and she is widely published in major international journals.
Speaking to Beat News, Dr. Patricia Mulcahy said she was delighted to have been re-appointed to the position and is looking forward to the next 5 years while also working with WIT's new President on the re-engagement with W.I.T, with a view to establishing a technological university in the south east.
Meanwhile, the Governing Body of Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) appointed Prof Willie Donnelly as the President of the Institute.
Prof Donnelly has served as interim President of WIT since April 2015.
Prior to his 2015 appointment as interim President Prof Donnelly was Vice President for Research, Innovation and Graduate Studies at WIT as well as Director and founder of the Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG), an internationally-renowned mobile services and communications management research centre.
Speaking after his appointment, Prof Donnelly said: “It is an honour to be re-appointed President of WIT. It is a privilege to lead an institute of such dedicated staff who, through their hard work and commitment, have established WIT as one of Ireland’s leading third level education institutions.”
“I have a deep commitment to equality of access to third level education for all students in the region, irrespective of their social or economic background, enabling them to meet their academic and social potential. The Institute will continue to drive the economic and social development of the region helping to ensure that we create employment for all our citizens,” he continued.
