New figures show that Enniscorthy now has a vacancy rate of 15.7%.
A number of shops have been forced to close which has led to an increase in vacant premises
Enniscorthy TD James Brown spoke to Beat news about the current position of the town and his proposed task force.
"The position with Enniscorthy is that it's a town with vast potential.
At the moment it is experiencing a number of vacancies in the town in terms of commercial vacancies.
It is behind a number of other towns and so what I've called for is a task force to be put together by the commercial interests, the council interests, community interests to bring a focus on the town because I think it can and should be thriving"
Speaking about the task force, James Brown said it will be modeled of Westport's previous task force.
"I understand that it is going to happen.
There's a template there from Retail Ireland.
We've seen similar task forces put together, for example, the best one is Westport in the west of Ireland who put together a task forces years ago and did huge work for the town.
Enniscorthy arguably has far more natural strengths than Westport.
There's huge potential in the town and I think if the task force is a focused task force if it has people who are very interested and motivated, I think they can do a huge for the town"
