Wexford TD tells Taoiseach to 'grow a pair' regarding fuel crisis

The Taoiseach has insisted Government couldn't go any further in cutting excise duty on fuel.

Ministers have agreed to reduce the charge by a third from midnight resulting in a drop of between 15 and 20 cent a litre.

But opposition parties have said the move isn't enough with Sinn Féin calling for excise to be scrapped altogether.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin says that isn't possible, however, Wexford TD Verona Murphy disagrees, and says the Government must do more to reduce charges on fuel.

Speaking in the Dáil today, the Independent Deputy said Micheál Martin needed to listen and work for the people of Ireland.

"You have not addressed the fact that you are applying tax on tax and there is no real reduction for anybody."

"Last night, DCI and many other suppliers put fuel up 15 cent a litre and it was notified to customers two days ago."

"This is what you can't seem to take on board, you can't seem to join the dots, it's time to get real."

"Because what will happen is people won't be able to afford to go to work, and we are nearly there."

"This is time for extraordinary measures, it's time you listened and you worked for the people of Ireland, it's time to be brave and grow a pair Taoiseach."
