Wexford Deputy assures trauma service is secure at Wexford General

Junior Defence Minister Paul Kehoe is trying to restore calm in Wexford after a report published in The Sunday Business post indicated trauma services would be removed from Wexford General.

The proposals to centralise trauma care also recommend closing services at South Tipp General in Clonmel and St Lukes in Kilkenny as well as 6 other hospitals around the country.

There was huge reaction in Wexford following the publication in the paper yesterday and local politicians called for the move to be resisted , insisting the Health Minister immediately clarified the new government's position concerning the media reports.

But Wexford Deputy Paul Kehoe says the report hasn't been presented to current Health Minister Simon Harris and there are no plans to close the trauma unit at Wexford General.

"This is following the agreement from the previous Minister of Health Leo Varadkar, he agreed to have this report carried out. It wasn't issued by the department of Health, it was report requested by the Royal College of Surgeons to examine the concept of a trauma network in our hospitals.

There is no proposals on the table at this moment in time and I don't believe that any emergency department in any of the hospitals will be closed down."
