Waterford TD calls for better investment from the health sector

Waste in health care needs to be eliminated, according to a Waterford TD.

It comes as figures released yesterday show that the HSE spent over 1.5 million euro a day on agency staff last year.

The first 11 months of 2021 cost the health service executive 513 million, compared to 390 million in all of the previous years.

They say extra agency staff were sourced to deal with the Covid pandemic.

Speaking to Beat News, Waterford TD David Cullinane says money needs to be investment where it's needed most;

"The more you invest in outsourcing and in agency staff, the more dependent the public health system becomes on it so we do need a change in approach and a complete change in how we look at that.

But we also need to make investments and we need to look at how we target those investments, additional spend and additional capacity where it's needed most."

He also says the health sector is playing with taxpayer's money so they need to get bank for buck;

"We do need to eliminate waste in the healthcare system and we do need to make sure that when we're paying huge amounts of the taxpayers money on health, which we do; 22 million just this year.

So, we have to make sure that we get bank for buck that we get value for money and that taxpayer's and public money is spent on public services."
