A County Waterford man has been jailed for two years for defilement and having sex with a child under the age of 15.
According to reports in the Waterford News & Star, the man, now 24, originally pleaded guilty to the charge in 2017.
However, sentencing was delayed when the man in question changed his legal team halfway through the proceedings.
In her victim impact statement, the girl said that she hated the fact that her parents had "lost trust in her" and added that her relationship with her mother had deteriorated.
The victim impact statement went on to say that before Christmas 2015, the 14-year-old girl randomly received a friend request on Facebook.
The girl, who was then in second year, accepted the request before the man who claimed to "[know] her from around the town" sent her some private messages.
The man later sent a picture of his penis to the girl asking for pictures of her breasts in return.
The court heard that the defendant felt "annoyed" by these requests but she eventually sent him an image of the top half of her body.
Failed attempts were then made by the male to meet up, which led to attempted blackmail.
In March 2016, the girl told the male that she had a free house and gave permission for him to call over.
Both parties had sex that night in the girl's family home and again at the man's home some days later.
Judge Eugene Kelly sentenced the man to two years and 10 months for each charge, with the final 10 months of each case suspended for a period of one-year post-release providing he complies with probation service recommendations.
