Waterford guitar genius Louis Stewart dies aged 72

The man credited as being Ireland's greatest Jazz guitarist has died at the age of 72.

Louis Stewart - from Waterford - has been described as an iconic musician.

President Michael D Higgins is leading tributes to Mr Stewart who died yesterday - saying he was outstanding.

He was a recipient of an honorary doctorate in music from Trinity College Dublin in 1998 due to his contributions to Irish music.

He began his career in the late 1960s and had been making music as recently as 2013 when he released an album of duets with Jim Doherty.

Over his astounding career, Stewart worked with legendary musicians as George Shearing and J.J Johnson.

In 2009, Stewart was elected to Aosdána, established by The Arts Council in 1981, to honour artists whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the creative arts in Ireland.

He spent his later years living in Dublin and was a regular in the Dublin Jazz scene until the very end.
