Waterford Council has called on the Justice Minister to immediately start the Commission of Inquiry into matters surrounding the crimes of paedophile Bill Kenneally.
Charlie Flanagan put a halt to it citing legal concerns last week - this week a discussion has been held with the Attorney General in relation to progressing the matter.
The cross-party motion to start the investigation passed unanimously at the meeting in Dungarvan last night.
Three of the survivors in attendance received a standing ovation.
Declan Clune of Sinn Fein brought the motion to the Chamber last night: "Mayor, this motion is about justice for the survivors of the systematic torture and sexual abuse carried out on them by convicted paedophile Bill Kenneally.
There remains serious questions to be answered to ascertain why Kenneally was allowed for close to four decades to be free to prey on young boys. There are also questions about the subsequent investigation and why crucial evidence including a videotape of Kenneally abusing a victim was not submitted during the trial.
I have here Mayor, a dossier which has been meticulously compiled by Declan Clancy which contains more questions than answers."
Wexford Council unanimously supported a similar motion earlier this week - a move welcomed by Labour leader Brendan Howlin.
