Ireland's human rights watchdog says a new law that would legalise assisted dying in certain circumstances is too simplistic.
The Human Rights and Equality Commission says the Dying with Dignity Bill - which was introduced by former Waterford TD John Halligan - "needs significant change" in areas like assisted decision making and consent.
It has made recommendations to the Justice Committee, which is considering submissions on the bill as it moves through the Oireachtas.
The watchdog's Chief Commissioner, Sinead Gibney, says further work on the bill is needed:
"How we approach it is to really look at the human rights and equality issues that are brought about by a discussion on a such a sensitive issue in the Oireachtas."
"We have some concerns about meeting those human rights and equality standards which we don't feel are currently met wit the bill as it is drafted."
