Legal age to buy cigarettes could increase every year in the UK

A review ordered by the British government is recommending the legal age for buying cigarettes in England should be increased by one year every year.

Author, Doctor Javed Khan, says that should happen 'until no one can buy a tobacco product in this country.'

British Ministers want to make smoking obsolete by 2030.

The heath secretary says the UK government will 'carefully consider' the proposals.

Recent figures have shown that smoking is decreasing in the UK.

The proportion of adults aged 16 years and above who said they smoked cigarettes in Great Britain was 14.5% in 2020, down from 15.8% in 2019 and continuing the downward trend seen since 1974.
