Tipperary activist issues warning to parents about Snapchat map feature

The latest Snapchat update could be used for the wrong reasons.

That's according to South Tipperary Peace Commissioner and Fine Gael activist Declan Burges.

He's urging parents to be aware of the app's new mapping feature, which sends a users location to their followers.

Declan says he became concerned when he saw the feature, and is urging Snapchat users to turn on 'ghost mode'.

He believes the new 'snap map' feature could be used to target young and vulnerable users.

The app was updated last month and Declan says the change is worrying:

"It's a very popular app and it's good for communication, but this new tool is quite possibly dangerous.

"I don't think anyone should be able to track you or locate you.

"There's a lot of young kids that would be users of Snapchat, and whatever you think of that it is a form of their communication with friends.

"I'd be very wary of young people getting into danger from people being able to track them.

"The more I looked into it, the more I felt that I needed to urge parents and Snapchat users that this is dangerous and could be used for the wrong reasons.

"I would be encouraging people to put their Snapchat on 'Ghost mode', so only you could be able to see your location, and no one else."
