Gardaí have arrested three men following a burglary at a construction site on the outskirts of Cork city early this morning.
Shortly after 3am, gardaí got a report from a CCTV monitoring company that a burglary was taking place at a construction site in Church Hill, Glanmire.
Gardaí from the Mayfield District rushed to the scene and arrested three men in their 20s.
They were brought to Mayfield and Gurranabraher Garda Stations and are being held under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
Crime Prevention Officer Sgt Tony Davis said some €7.8m worth of goods was stolen from construction sites in 2017 - €6.3m of which was tools.
It prompted the launch of a major garda crime prevention campaign last year aimed at construction site security called ‘Secure It Keep It’.
"A few tips such as getting good security lighting, setting up fences or hoardings, storing tools in a secure area and keeping machinery in well like areas with the keys stored away will help make the site more secure," Sgt Davis said.
"Setting up a CCTV system is highly advised if you know you are going to be carrying out work for a prolonged period. Thankfully, this construction site did that and, as a result, we were able to make these arrests today."
