Thousands of people in the South East have taken part in the Darkness into Light walk this morning.
Carlow, Kilkenny, Enniscorthy, New Ross, Wexford Town, Courtown, Thurles, Carrick, Tipp Town, Cashel, Dungarvan and Waterford City all hosted walks.
This year marks the ninth anniversary of the Darkness Into Light walks for Pieta House.
Pieta House opened it's South East centre in Waterford on September 20th of this year, the Centre's Manager, Michael O'Brien explained to Beat News how the money raised from the walks supports its services:
"We've seen 20,000 clients in a 10 year period, since the centre's opening in Waterford we've offered over 1,200 counselling hours to the public, we've had 230 people access the service and currently 52 people are receiving treatment within the building."
This year marks the first time the walk took place in Thurles.
Close to 2,ooo people turned up in Thurles to take part in the town's very first darkness into light. Chairperson of Darkness Into Light Thurles, Jonathan Gleeson told Beat News why the town chose to get involved this year:
"We just felt we needed to get involved. There's a huge population in and around Thurles who tend to veer to other walks and we just wanted to get some of those people back and do it locally in our own town. We look forward to doing an even better job next year".
