Taoiseach in Kilkenny Last Night Talking Irish Farming & Brexit

The Irish farming industry will have to explore new markets in order to lessen the effects of Brexit.

Thats according to Joe Costello of the National Livestock Comittee.

He spoke to Beat news after Enda Kenny's apperence at an Irish Farmer's Association Aniversary dinner in Kilkenny last night.

The Taoiseach said Brexit could bring challenges to the issue of trade between Ireland and the UK and the Kilkenny farmer, who attended the event, spoke about the Taoiseach's comments.

"He pointed out the challenges that face us, and we are under no illusions. We export half our beef into the UK and if they're leaving the UK, they could introduce tarrifs", Costello said.

"We're going into new markets. China, North Africa, Emirates States. Everywhere we can. And we have to be confident", he said.

Mr. Costello was keen to express his faith in the Irish product.

"Beef is built on confidence", he said.  "We have to be confident because we have the best beef in the world. We also have the most traceable product in the world."
