Suspects in Wexford face prosecution this year for paying for sex with a prostitute

Suspects in Wexford face prosecution this year for paying for sex with a prostitute.

In 2018, the Director of Public Prosecutions directed that seven people in Ireland should face court proceedings for the offence.

That's according to details released under the freedom of information act, which show 14 people face prosecution this year including suspects in Wexford, Cork, Dublin and Louth.

Since April 2017, it's been illegal to buy sexual services.

Sheila Crowley is from Ruhama, which supports women affected by prostitution - she says the figures are very low, but Gardaí are trying to enforce the law;

"I would hope to see more arrests in the future, because that's the only way there would be a deterrent to men buying sex. We know that from the research, where men have said the only thing that would deter them is getting caught...and going to court."
