Irish supermarkets have been selling out of bread and milk ahead of the ‘Beast from the East’.

Over the last 24 hours pictures on social media show rows of empty supermarket shelves at stores across the country.

Some retailers say sales are up 40%, and they are bringing in extra supplies to cope with the demand.

One of them, Tesco, says it will be bringing in extra deliveries overnight.

Manager with Supervalu in Rathgar PJ Kennedy explains the items most in demand.

He said: “The milks, breads, hot drinks like teas and coffees. Also convenience meals, stuff that people can put in the fridge.

“Hot meals, like Indian meals, and there are also soups. It’s something people can just fall back on that they don’t have to worry about too much.”
