Star gazers will be treated to a rare nighttime spectacle later on.

Jupiter is set to blaze above the moon tonight, with the peak of the event due at 10pm.

Astronomy Ireland says the pairing of Jupiter and the moon will start to become visible at around sunset at 5 o'clock this evening, when the planet will be just to the upper left of the Moon as they rise in the east.

People who witness the astronomical event are asked to send a written report or photo to astronomy.ie, for publication in Astronomy Ireland's magazine coverage of the rare occurrence.
