South East beaches receive 'excellent' ratings for quality

According to a review from the Environmental Protection Agency, South East beaches are among the cleanest in the country.

Over a 3 year period from 2014 to 2016, the EPA published reports regarding the quality of the bathing water in 140 beaches throughout Ireland.

Each beach was marked out of a possible 9 maximum points.

9 out of 13 beaches that were analysed in the South East were awarded the maximum 9 points for quality.

The cleanest beaches in the region include:

 

  • Clonea Beach, Waterford
  • Councillor's Strand, Dunmore East, Waterford
  • Dunmore Strand, Dunmore East, Waterford
  • Tramore Beach, Waterford
  • Ballymoney North Beach, Wexford
  • Courtown North Beach, Wexford
  • Curracloe Beach, Wexford
  • Morriscastle Beach, Wexford
  • Rosslare Strand, Wexford

 

The 'poorest' scoring beaches in the region were Ardmore in Waterford and Duncannon in County Wexford.

High bacteria levels, wastewater, and pollution are among the reasons why these beaches scored so poorly.
