Serious investment needed in Wexford from Irish Water, Mayor says

There's a serious amount of investment needed in Wexford from Irish Water.

That's the view of Mayor Garry Laffin as almost 44,000 people are under a boil water notice in the county.

On Thursday, a boil water notice was issued for Gorey while another was in place during October's bank holiday weekend for Wexford Town.

Speaking to Beat news, Mayor Laffin says the system couldn't handle the excessive rainfall recently:

"The filtration systems at the three plants were overwhelmed. There was a lot of dirty water that was washed down from the mountains. At that stage then, they had to stop water supply and when they did clean the water they had to put a boil water notice in place simply for safety measures."

Laffin added that serious investment into the county is 'badly' needed from Irish Water:

"When Irish Water was taking over, basically all of the staff are still County Council workers so that's where the mixup is but Irish Water is the body that controls this and Irish Water are the people that need to make the investment into this. It is an Irish Water issue and there is a serious investment needed into the issue in the county."
