Secret emergency plans prepared by Government could involve potential rolling blackouts this winter.
The contingency plans would introduce energy shutdowns of up to 4 hours' duration - affecting 125,000 households at a time.
The Sunday Independent reports a confidential planning exercise codenamed DARA has been put in place with industry and state bodies, to examine the consequences of a 20 percent reduction in energy supplies to the Republic and the North.
Speaking to the paper, A spokesperson for the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications said the exercise was to test the country’s response to a “hypothetical and unlikely disruption to Ireland’s gas and electricity supplies”.
