Ukrainian intelligence say that Putin's assassination is being planned by Russian elite
A ‘group of influential’ members of Russia’s elite are plotting to kill the Russian president. This is according to the Chief Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
This group hope that the president’s death will allow Russia to restore economic ties with the west. The intelligence brief also describes how the elite are horrified at the war and its resulting sanctions have had on the Russian economy.
The Ukrainian intelligence service comments on how Federal Security Service director Oleksander Bortnikov has been chosen as a replacement.
"It is known that Bortnikov and some other influential representatives of the Russian elite are considering various options to remove Putin from power," the Chief Directorate of Intelligence said.
The agency points to how military losses experienced by Chechen forces in the north of Ukraine may have influenced the plan.
