As part of an intelligence led operation yesterday, Revenue Officers stopped and searched a van in Waterford city and found 20,000 contraband cigarettes.
The cigarettes were branded ‘Mayfair’ and have a retail value of over €11,000, representing a potential loss to the exchequer of over €9,700.
Revenue officers interviewed a local man in his 60s, and seized the illicit cigarettes and the van.
A prosecution file is being prepared.
In a statement released by Revenue they said, "the majority of people pay the right amount of tax and duty.
