Public warned of new danger in Ireland - "mini avalanches"

The public is being warned today of a new danger in Ireland - mini avalanches.

The heavy snow caused by Storm Emma and the Beast from the East has created this danger as large chunks of snow are slipping down from roofs and trees.

Another danger to the public is the icicles hanging above footpaths.

John Mulholland is chair of the County and City Management Association's Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Planning committee and he was speaking to RTE earlier today.

He was asked about "mini avalanches" that have fallen from roofs in Dublin and he said they were "a new phenomenon" and warned the public to be careful.

"Snow will fall from roofs and trees," he added.

Mr. Mulholland also warned of the danger of floods as the snow melts.
