A proposal to ban dogs from being walked in Carlow town has been sent to the county's local authority.
It comes as a large amount of dog fouling in the town.
The man, who sent the proposal to Carlow County Council, says dogs should be banned from busy footpaths in the town and should only be walked on the outskirts of Carlow town.
Speaking to Beat News, Jannette O’Brien, Environmental Awareness Officer with Carlow County Council says it's not practical:
"While I understand people's frustration, it's really not practical to ban dogs from a town centre."
"We have to have consideration for the amount of people who have support dogs in our area, whether that be emotional well-being or seeing-eye dogs, they need those for socialising and safety in our community."
Jannette added that dog fouling is not as big an issue as people think.
According to the National Litter Monitoring Survey, 4% of the overall litter in the county is dog poo.
Jannette O’Brien says the issue isn't big enough to ban our four-legged friends from Carlow town:
"It highlights that litter in terms of dog fouling is only 4 per cent of our overall litter in the whole of Carlow so it really shows that it's a really emotive topic, it's not really as big an issuer as people may think."
