Petition started to make Leaving Cert a hybrid model again this year

A decision to make the Leaving Cert exams this year a hybrid model needs to be made.

That's according to the Labour Party, which has launched a petition calling on the Department of Education to do that.

In previous years the exams were replaced by calculated grades, based upon teachers' assessment of a student's previous work.

Labour Education spokesperson Aodhán Ó Ríordáin says the uncertainty is putting students under too much strain:

"Students around the country are now looking towards their mock exams, practicals, and orals - a comprehensive decision needs to be made now to relieve some of the anxiety that has arisen within the student body."

Meanwhile, the Education Minister says air filters aren't needed in every classroom and going straight to technology is not the answer.

An online campaign by primary teachers highlighted classroom temperatures dropping below seven degrees in some classrooms this week.

Minister Norma Foley says her department will make funds available to any school struggling with heating bills due to the pandemic ventilation requirements.
