People who excessively burn turf could face up to two years in jail.
New regulations on the sale and use of turf came into effect yesterday.
Reports suggest local authorities will be tasked with ensuring those burning turf are not creating a 'significant level of air pollution and causing a nuisance' to neighbours.
The Irish Daily Mail reports there are concerns among Government backbench TD's that the strength of the regulations weren't fully communicated by Energy Minister Eamon Ryan.
