The penalty for parking on footpaths, cycle tracks, and bus lanes is being doubled.
From February 1st, the penalty's set to double to €80 from the current rate of 40.
It's hoped that the increased penalties will improve access for vulnerable road users, people in wheelchairs, and those pushing buggies or prams.
Fianna Fail Councillor for Waterford City, Eamon Quinlan says there have been concerns around footpath safety amongst vulnerable road users for a long time.
Speaking to Beat news, he says he welcomes the move;
"We have had a lot of concerns from the blind, people with mobility issues, people in wheelchairs - and especially in a place like Waterford City with 100-year-old small footpaths where you have some bad motorists that can tpark on the paths - which is not going to fly."
