Waterford City & County Council is urging parents not to light bonfires or use fireworks this Halloween.
In a notice circulated to parents of a primary school in Waterford city, parents are reminded that bonfires and fireworks can "cause injury to children... terrify pets and damage your environment."
Parents are also urged not to supply materials for bonfires or leave wheelie bins out.
The frequency of bonfires has reduced dramatically in recent years, but a relaxation of Covid restrictions is set to see an increase in bonfire incidents this Halloween.
Gardaí are also urging people to be "spooky smart" this Halloween, offering this advice to parents:
- Keep away from bonfires.
- Do not buy, use, or ignite fireworks.
- Add a reflective material if dressing up in dark clothes
- Remember that your behaviour affects your neighbours - loud noises created by fireworks, bangers and bonfires can scare people and animals.
