There's been opposition to a plan by Waterways Ireland to replace a grassy towpath along the river Barrow.
The group want to change a 115km towpath between Kildare and Carlow to a hard surface to accomodate a cycleway.
Planning permission to start the work is to be lodged this week with Carlow County Council.
The Carlow Barrow Users Group is opposed to the plan and has raised questions about it's suitability
Carlow TD Pat Deering told Beat News, "well I think there's been a lot of discussion about this particular development - this blueway project for the past while.
I think it's very important, that first of all we have an area of untapped potential in the River Barrow.
It's a great ameniety we have and we're lucky to have it in our area but I do think it's important that the concerns of those people who've expressed a difference of opinions on this particular project are taken on board in the planning process that will ensue over the next period of time.
I think it's also important that Waterways Ireland listen to the view of the people concerned"
