Online petition set up in support of 24 hour cath lab

The plea for immediate implementation of constant cardiac care has garnered over 7,000 signatures in 24 hours.

The call reemerged following the death of a Waterford farmer who died en route to a Cork hospital for cardiac care.

38-year-old Thomas Power died on Sunday and will be laid to rest at 12 noon today.

Ministers across the region are raising the issue in the Dail.

Speaking in the Dáil yesterday, Wexford Deputy and Labour Leader Brendan Howlin said, "I think the Taoiseach will be aware of the genuine consternation in the entire south-east - not only in the Waterford constituency - but in my constituency and across the south-east.

At the genuine belief that a man lost his life for the lack of a cath lab facility over the weekend in Waterford.

It was our understanding that pending the conclusion of a second review that a mobile second lab would be in place by the first quarter of this year - a commitment that has not now been fulfilled"

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said, "HSE has issued a tender for the provision of a temporary mobile cath lab, so that is now out to tender, obviously tenders take a bit of time.

It will depend on how many companies tender for it and so on but given that it is now out to tender after various delays it is anticipated that the second cath lab - the mobile cath lab -will be in place by September.
