The Irish Naturist Association has asked Wexford County Council to provide a designated nude bathing area.
They have formally requested a section of Curracloe Beach be designated as naturist or clothing optional 'where naturists could swim and sunbathe nude'.
Speaking to the Wexford People, the President and PRO of the Irish Naturist Association, Pat Gallagher, said the request came after recent controversy over a meeting of the association's members at Curracloe Beach. In his letter to the Council, he said "We suggest that a portion of the Reserve parallel to the beach be included in the designated area. It is secluded and can only be reached after a long walk. We suggest that signs such as "Nude bathers may be seen beyond this point", be put up to ensure that any member of the public visiting the area will not be shocked or offended."
In early May, a group of naturists from across the South East met at Curracloe Beach. The County Mayor said “Well I think it’s a case of live and let live but eh, if that was to happen on the main street in Wexford you’d be arrested by members of An Garda Siochana for indecent exposure."
