'No-fry zones' could be introduced across the South East

No-fry zones around schools could become more common after campaigners scored a major victory in Wicklow.

Councillors there have voted to ban new takeaways from being built or operated within 400 metres of schools, in an effort to curb childhood obesity.

A 200 metre ban is already in place in Co Wexford, as well as in Fingal and Dun Laoghaire in Dublin.

Philip Moyles, chairman of the campaign group No Fry Zone 4 Kids, told the Irish Independent: "We are delighted that the councillors have taken this step forward in the fight against obesity."
