You can now find out if a will exists and where it's located.
A new will register has been developed by Carlow-based Solicitors firm Farrell McElwee and Entrepreneur Mike Fraher.
The idea behind the database is to make it easier to find out if a will exists and where it can be found.
Speaking to Beat news, Joe Farrell from Farrell McElwee Solicitors, outlines how the idea came about;
"A guy called Mike Fraher came into us with a genuine question, and he had said to us how will my family know where the will is. We said to him, you could tell people where it is. He made a valid point, and said what if that office isn't in existence anymore. So we began troubleshooting from there, and looked at the possibility of a will register."
The Will Register provides security to testators ensuring their will can be found and their last wishes adhered to. The details of the will are not disclosed and The Will Register does not need to see a copy of the will.
Ireland is one of the few European countries that does not have a Will Register. Currently, there is no Government led register of wills. The Will Register aims to provide a discreet and easy service for those who need to urgently locate the will of a deceased person. It is Ireland’s first public register of wills.
