New smoking ban to target public parks and beaches

Smokers could soon be outlawed from lighting up in outdoor public spaces like beaches and parks.

The latest report from the Department of Health's Tobacco-Free Ireland section, outlines plans to promote a smoking ban in conjunction with local authorities.

According to the Irish Independent that could involve voluntary measures but also by-laws banning smoking.

The paper reports that last year 56 complaints were made to environmental health officers about breaches of tobacco control.

There were also six convictions secured for people lighting up where they should not, as well as over the sale of cigarettes to children.

The Irish Independent went on to say that Health Minister Stephen Donnelly, who launched the report with junior minister Frank Feighan, said: “Stopping smoking remains one of the best decisions a person can make for their health and the HSE Quit service is available to anyone who needs support to take that first step.”
