National Slow Down Day registers speeds of over 130 km/h in the South East

National Slow Down Day came to a close at 7 am this morning, following a 24-hour operation on Irish roads.

GoSafe checked the speed of 225,685 vehicles, with 592 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

Among the 592 vehicles that were travelling at excessive speeds, a motorist in Offaly was clocked at 147km/h in a 120km/h Zone on the M6.

Regionally, a vehicle was caught travelling at 131km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N25 Begerin (Loftus) New Ross Wexford, with another in Kilmacthomas Waterford travelling at 129km/h in a 100km/h Zone.

An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed-related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.

As reported by RTÉ news, the Road Safety Authority has confirmed nine people were killed and 30 seriously injured in the last week of December last year alone.
