Tipperary horse trainer Mouse Morris and the WIT Ladies Basketball Team have been named the joint winners of the March South East Sports Star Award with Beat 102-103 and Mount Wolseley Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort, Tullow, Co. Carlow.
Mouse Morris, who is based in Fethard, was nominated for the award after training Rogue Angel at 16/1 to victory in the Irish Grand National. Less than two weeks later he completed an incredible double when 33/1 shot Rule The World claimed the Aintree Grand National, perhaps the world's most famous national hunt race.
His success was all the more poignant as it came less than a year after Mouse's son Christopher 'Tiffer' Mouse passed away following an accident in Argentina.
A number of weeks later they also claimed the women's "A" intervarsity title for the first time, this time defeating TCD 68-44.
Both achievements were equally deserving of the accolade, and after an incredibly tight public vote on beat102103.com the committee has chosen to reward both the Tipp and Waterford nominees with the honour.
Mouse and WIT are the third and fourth monthly winners of the 2016 South East Sports Star Award, after Douglas Elmes and Padraig Amond claimed the January and February awards respectively. They will now all go on as nominees for the 2016 South East Sports Star of the Year Award, which will be announced at Mount Wolseley in early 2017.
The other nominees for the February award were Carlow athlete Marcus Lawler, Kilkenny hurler TJ Reid, and Wexford horse trainer Joseph O'Brien.
Beat is now taking nominations for the April award, so if you’ll like to nominate your favourite sports star email [email protected]. The five nominees will be announced on Sportsbeat Roundup in early May.
