People in Waterford are being encouraged to 'ask for Angela' if they get into trouble on a night out.
The safety campaign, launched by Purple flag and WIT, allows people who feel vulnerable in pubs or bars to discreetly signal for help.
The scheme allows customers who could be feeling threatened or unsafe on a date to get help by approaching the bar and asking for "Angela".
Bar staff will be trained to immediately respond to the safety signal.
Michael Murphy, President of WIT Students Union, explains more:
"If you're in a situation where you're not comfortable, whether that be a date isn't going well or a group of friends are engaging in an activity you're not comfortable with you can then go up to the bar or any staff member and just say 'is Angela working tonight?'
"You let on that 'Angela' is your friend, they know that's the code word for 'I need to leave, can you please help me'.
"Then they'll bring you to the back room, see if its a matter for the Gardaí, or more often than not just call you a taxi and get you home safely."
