Kilkenny pensioner in murder trial died from asphyxia

The jury in the trial of a man accused of murdering a pensioner in Kilkenny has heard a piece of cardboard or hard paper was found at the back of her mouth.

Trevor Rowe, of Abbey Street, Kilkenny, denies murdering 71-year-old Anne Butler in her home on March 20th 2020.

The Pensioner's body was found five days after it’s believed she was killed and State Pathologist, Dr Linda Mulligan, told the jury she had a slash type wound across her throat.

She also found stab wounds to her body and there was bruising on both sides of her head and on her arms and legs.

Dr Mulligan said she also found a piece of hard paper or cardboard in Anne’s throat, which, she said was obstructing her airwaves.

The pathologist concluded that the cause of her death was asphyxia in association with blunt force trauma to the head, the cut to her throat and multiple stab wounds.

Trevor Rowe was the one who led gardai to her door after he made a number of anonymous 999 calls, but he has pleaded not guilty to her murder.
