Kilkenny, Carlow and Tipperary to benefit from new greenway funding

New walking and cycling greenways and outdoor trails across Ireland are to be developed and upgraded with €11 million in funding announced on Tuesday.

Among the projects is the development of an outdoor activity hub in Graiguenamanagh, Co. Kilkenny, which is to receive €124,000 of funding.

Another South East project includes €200,000 for a pedestrian walkway from Cashel to the Rock of Cashel and Hore Abbey in Co. Tipperary.

€20,000 will also be made available for bike docking stations across the Carlow countryside.

Making the announcement of the 78 projects nationwide, Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring said it is a “tremendous investment in the future of Ireland”.

He added that greenway activity is attracting people into the outdoors in large numbers.

He said a survey of users on the Waterford greenway, Ireland’s longest off-road cycling and walking trail, indicated that almost two-thirds of users are local people.
