The Viking Triangle in Waterford won a top award this week and was named as the "Great Place" in Ireland and the UK.

The award is one of five given out annually by The Academy of Urbanism to recognise the best, most enduring or most improved cities, towns, neighbourhoods, streets and places. Voted on by Academicians, who include leading architects, planners and developers, each award looks at a number of social, economic and environmental factors, including good governance and commercial success.

Yet, many of you have known how great this place is for a long while and have been showing it off on Instagram.

For a start, the viking Triangle has some pretty impressive buildings, sculptures and architecture....

Reginald's Tower looks pretty smashing at night...

But it's also nice to grab a coffee underneath and watch the cruise ships in town...

And the view of the river from the top of Reginald's Tower is pretty decent too...

The thing about the Viking triangle is there is ALWAYS something happening, like the Tri-Colour Celebration, celebrating the first unveiling of the Irish Tricolour flag by Thomas Francis Meagher at 33 the Mall in Waterford city in 1848...

Or the lovely wafting scents of delicious food during the Harvest Festival....

Or some of the beautiful artwork during the Waterford Walls Festival...

How about a game of chess in Cathedral Square?

Or maybe an impromptu street gig?

You'll find Strongbow and Aoife knocking around the place. You can sit with them....

Or pose as them...

This pug was delighted to take control of the Viking longboat...

But sometimes it's nice to have the place to yourself too..
